Is Your Local Track in Sim Racing?

As games add more and more circuits to their line-ups, they must delve into the more niche locations. That is how RaceRoom got my two most local tracks, but what is your most local venue in sim racing?

Too often are motorsport and its fandom limited to the upper echelons of the sport, with Formula One and the WEC taking the limelight of conversations. But many true enthusiasts of racing will just as happily enjoy grassroots, club level racing.

That is why one's local race track can evoke such great emotions. From echoing back to your first days by the catch fence to flashbacks of action taking place just in front of your eyes, local venues hold a great place in our hearts.

So when these perhaps lesser-known racing locations show up in sim racing games, it is a great excuse to get out the credit card or spend a few hours in the sim. Loading up a circuit that you have visited yourself in real life is always a brilliant experience. From driving round and remembering different moments from your memories to opening the free camera and inspecting the creation's accuracy; one can spend hours visiting a virtual recreation. So the question is, which of your local racetracks are in sim racing games? And are they any good?

Editor's Story

You may not want to hear my life's story. But to best explain what I deem my local race tracks, reading part of it is inevitable. As a young boy from England, my family moved to the South West of France when I was six years old. Since then, I have spent my entire life living between Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Unfortunately, compared to the East of the country, my local region is fairly empty when it comes to motorsport. However, it is home to a pair of fantastic venues that are arguably iconic across all of motorsport.

Nogaro Coupe de Paques - Aston GT4.JPG

Aston Martin GT4 fighting at Nogaro, my local track.

From where I am writing this, in the centre of Toulouse, I am just an hour and a half's drive from Nogaro, Circuit Paul Armagnac. Not to be mistaken with that other Paul track, it is a small layout, lined with grass that nowadays is best-known for hosting the Coupe de Pâques, or Easter Cup. Up until 2014, this event featured the Blancpain GT Series. Though before its renaming to the Fanatec GT World Challenge, the main SRO series left my neck of the woods, to be replaced by the FFSA GT. Now, every year at Easter - so this weekend - I attend this popular event to watch GT4 cars battle it out for the National title.

In 2017 and 2018, this French GT4 series featured a pair of opening rounds in the South West of France, the second of which took the paddock to Pau. No, not the twisty Cadwell Park lookalike of Pau-Arnos, but the full fat street circuit that closes roads each May. Ever since I was a young child, I have also visited Pau on a yearly basis, first going to watch the historic event with my parents. But as I grew up, my annual trips focused on the modern Pau Grand Prix, including winners such as Clark and Fangio, no less.

My Local Tracks In Sim Racing

As you can no-doubt tell by now, I am very lucky to see both of my local circuits feature in sim racing. Not only do both Pau and Nogaro get nice third party recreations in Assetto Corsa by @Ginot Team, they are also both available to drive as official content in RaceRoom Racing Experience.

In addition to these two major racing locations, my local area also features the aforementioned Pau-Arnos. A permanent road course not far from the home to the Pau Grand Prix, this circuit rarely hosts racing, instead focusing on track days for petrol heads. But the track does have a fairly useable version for Assetto Corsa available here. Whilst not perfectly accurate, it should help me prepare for any track days I will hopefully take part in this year with my car, also in sim racing.

Are any of your local race tracks available in sim racing? What do you make of their representations?

Unfortunately not.
There used to be a non-permanent race track in Hamburg, Germany.
It was used between 1934 and 1952 for motorcycle and sidecar races for the German Motorcycle Road Championship. It ran through the Hamburg city park and was 6 kilometers long when it opened and was subsequently expanded to 6.5 kilometers. After the war it only started at 4.5 kilometers, but was later extended again. An accident in which 3 spectators and the racing drivers died ended the city park era.
Bernd Rosemeyer wanted to win his championship title in the last race there, but had an accident in training and was banned from starting by a doctor. He missed this one.
Only the city park revival reminds us of this glorious time.

I'm local to a circuit, Bedford Autodrome. I've seen it in a couple of places, and it looks like (I'm fairly new to SIM racing) that it was once a working mod for AC. Pity it doesn't work now.
I used to work there as a marshall, and did get to take the course car around when there was nothing on track for the day to do clean-up around the track. I would love to see the mod updated to work again, along with the alternate layouts (North, South, East and West circuits, along with South-West and GT). Would be awesome, I'd try myself but I don't have the knowledge.

I live just round the corner (5 miles?) from RallyX track Estering in Buxtehude. On race weekends - if the wind is right - I can hear the motors doing the short sprint races. It was DLC in Dirt Rally2 and it felt very strange riding around it online because I sometimes pass it doing errands (but never actually went to a race weekend, not really interested in RallyX to be honest).

Duuuude! RallyX (as in what was RallyX Nordic) will take at trip to Estering this year. I maintain that the RallyX is the best RX-championship at the moment. With the different tracks and classes. They actually manage to have ICE-Supercar classs, they have an electrical class, they have crosskarts and they have the 2WD Open. And with "open" it is truly open. Proper old-style RX.
You have a finn in a Ford Escort Estate, there is FWD machines, there is a BMW M3 with a Wankel-engine(!). There's a Mercedes 190E Hybrid. Yup. The Swede has a home-made hybrid system, made in his garage by the side of his house, everything is self built. He is using his mom's (or was it mother-in-law) old smartphone in the car to control the hybrid system. It is an amazing class!

Like this:

Or with the estate (and TWO wankel engined cars, as can be heard) (timestamped if it works)

I know, I know. You said you aren't that interested in RX. But man. This is probably 2nd or 3rd in the list of "I want to visit, and I want to drive on" tracks for me!

One of my many regrets is that I haven't been to enough races and that I haven't followed motorsports for many-many years, just on a really high level. This is underlined about visiting, or rather not visiting local tracks.

I'm originally from Southwest Hungary and in my hometown there were two cross tracks (not sure about the current status: one for motocross (seems to be very much active) and one for autocross, the European kind (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autocross_(European)). There were some pretty good autocross drivers from my hometown, so back in the days behind the Iron Curtain and in the early '90s there were quite a few races, I've been to one for sure, most likely in the late '80s. I can't find any hint on satellite pictures anymore, so the track is most likely gone. I've been to several motocross races though. Nevertheless, as both tracks are/were *cross tracks of local relevance, there's no chance of any simracing relevance :)

In the meantime there were 2 tracks built that are pretty close: the Pannoniaring and the Balaton Park Circuit. The former is probably more bike-focused, used to host the Sidecar World Championship and from what I gathered, there are a lot of German- and Austrian-organized bike track days, although I'm pretty sure that car track days are hosted, as well. The Balaton Park Circuit is brand new, that'd be probably even closer if I still lived at home. It will host the World SBK Championship this year and maybe MotoGP next year. Anyway, both tracks are available here on Overtake as AC mods.

I moved then to Budapest (college, work) and obviously there's the Hungaroring which is represented in ACC, iRacing and RaceRoom, plus in AC as a mod (if I'm not mistaken, you can find the original 1986 and the updated layouts, too) and I guess in the ETRC game, as well. I've been there a few times (by far not enough), at least I've seen the 1998 FIA GT Championship fields in its full glory (the GT1 miracles like the 911, CLK-LM, CLK-GTS, McLaren F1 GTR or the Panoz and some cool GT2s like the Oreca Vipers and the ever-present 993 GT2s) and the Marcos in '99.

From Hungary we moved to Germany, the local track was this time the Hockenheimring as it was about 20 minutes away from us. During the almost 2 years we lived there I've never been to any event there... yep, very sad. I've been to a Sport Auto Tuner GP in 2003 though but we drove from Hungary. Still, it remains the only track I've ever driven myself (apart from 2 Nordschleife laps), although only once during our Germany stint, then with my 2006 Focus ST. In terms of simracing it's a known quantity like the Hungaroring. It's available in RaceRoom, iRacing, AMS1 and AMS2 as DLC content and in Forza starting FM4, plus via mods in AC and rF2.

Finally, we ended up in the US. I have yet to visit any motorsport event in the US, which is a shame - so I'm gonna visit the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge event at Mid-Ohio this coming June because it like 7.5 hours away :). Anyway the closest track is New Jersey Motorsport Park which hosts various events like the Lemons and ChampCar endurance races or NASA and SCCA event but also MotoAmerica races. In terms of ovals The Tricky Triangle (Pocono) and Dover are also pretty close. I'm not a NASCAR fan but definitely want to see one race for the experience. All 3 are available on iRacing, although for NJMP only one of the layouts (Thunderbolt). Overtake hosts AC mods for both layouts of NJMP and saw a Pocono mod, as well.

Sorry for the wall of text!!

totally love how the front inside wheel comes up in the turns (Look, Ma, no hands!). If you do get round to visiting Estering one of these days, Ole, gives us a shout! Cup of coffee in the garden always available.

Even though I'm solidly into my 30's now, I'm still not "old enough" to drink coffee! :p But if I end up visiting Estering, I am all in for a Coca-Cola ;D

This is just outside my hometown of Hamburg.
Almost around the corner.
However, the town near the Estering has an absolutely stupid name.
Buxtehude.
Whoever came up with this city name was definitely on alcohol.
No sober person would think of something like that.

By the way, Cola is just a dark mixture of water and sugar with a little caffeine. So it's a limp coffee.

In old German a "Hude" is a place to land and tie your boat, many place names in Hamburg use it (Harvestehude, for instance, the place where you unload your harvest) and "Buxte" is the old German form of birchtree, the new German being "Buche". So, what we have is a place where you can tie up your boat next to some birches. But since the name sounds droll, it is used in two famous German fairytales and as a consequence, if in South Germany you state that you come from there, some won't believe it's a real place. But it is, population 30,000, Airbus has some of their offices here, and our female handball team is a first league mainstay.
Sorry, just the local patriot coming through ;)

Genau das wollte ich damit sagen.
Buxtehude klingt einfach witzig.

That's exactly what I wanted to say. Buxtehude just sounds funny.
Otherwise the “altes Land” is a beautiful place. Especially during cherry blossom season.
Then it occurs to me that I could eat a fish sandwich in Cranz again at the weekend.

There is only 1 track in my country, planned to host F1 in 2021, but being cancelled due COVID-19. And now it has been abandoned before i have chance to visit, so sad.
