Is Your Local Track in Sim Racing?

As games add more and more circuits to their line-ups, they must delve into the more niche locations. That is how RaceRoom got my two most local tracks, but what is your most local venue in sim racing?

Too often are motorsport and its fandom limited to the upper echelons of the sport, with Formula One and the WEC taking the limelight of conversations. But many true enthusiasts of racing will just as happily enjoy grassroots, club level racing.

That is why one's local race track can evoke such great emotions. From echoing back to your first days by the catch fence to flashbacks of action taking place just in front of your eyes, local venues hold a great place in our hearts.

So when these perhaps lesser-known racing locations show up in sim racing games, it is a great excuse to get out the credit card or spend a few hours in the sim. Loading up a circuit that you have visited yourself in real life is always a brilliant experience. From driving round and remembering different moments from your memories to opening the free camera and inspecting the creation's accuracy; one can spend hours visiting a virtual recreation. So the question is, which of your local racetracks are in sim racing games? And are they any good?

Editor's Story

You may not want to hear my life's story. But to best explain what I deem my local race tracks, reading part of it is inevitable. As a young boy from England, my family moved to the South West of France when I was six years old. Since then, I have spent my entire life living between Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Unfortunately, compared to the East of the country, my local region is fairly empty when it comes to motorsport. However, it is home to a pair of fantastic venues that are arguably iconic across all of motorsport.

Nogaro Coupe de Paques - Aston GT4.JPG

Aston Martin GT4 fighting at Nogaro, my local track.

From where I am writing this, in the centre of Toulouse, I am just an hour and a half's drive from Nogaro, Circuit Paul Armagnac. Not to be mistaken with that other Paul track, it is a small layout, lined with grass that nowadays is best-known for hosting the Coupe de Pâques, or Easter Cup. Up until 2014, this event featured the Blancpain GT Series. Though before its renaming to the Fanatec GT World Challenge, the main SRO series left my neck of the woods, to be replaced by the FFSA GT. Now, every year at Easter - so this weekend - I attend this popular event to watch GT4 cars battle it out for the National title.

In 2017 and 2018, this French GT4 series featured a pair of opening rounds in the South West of France, the second of which took the paddock to Pau. No, not the twisty Cadwell Park lookalike of Pau-Arnos, but the full fat street circuit that closes roads each May. Ever since I was a young child, I have also visited Pau on a yearly basis, first going to watch the historic event with my parents. But as I grew up, my annual trips focused on the modern Pau Grand Prix, including winners such as Clark and Fangio, no less.

My Local Tracks In Sim Racing

As you can no-doubt tell by now, I am very lucky to see both of my local circuits feature in sim racing. Not only do both Pau and Nogaro get nice third party recreations in Assetto Corsa by @Ginot Team, they are also both available to drive as official content in RaceRoom Racing Experience.

In addition to these two major racing locations, my local area also features the aforementioned Pau-Arnos. A permanent road course not far from the home to the Pau Grand Prix, this circuit rarely hosts racing, instead focusing on track days for petrol heads. But the track does have a fairly useable version for Assetto Corsa available here. Whilst not perfectly accurate, it should help me prepare for any track days I will hopefully take part in this year with my car, also in sim racing.

Are any of your local race tracks available in sim racing? What do you make of their representations?

AMS 2 has 'Brasilia' circuit, which is where I live. It's the capital of Brazil.
The circuit itself is (hopefully) finishing it's renovation, but still is good to see the track prior the reformation.
The enviroment outside the track though is incredibly faithful to real life.

Still waiting for an accurate Eastern Creek / SMSP to make it to simracing, may have to wait for iRacing to do it i guess, there are some innacutrate ones all based on the same bad scan data, which if you have driven (ridden in my case) this track at all you would know are hopelessly wrong. Sad since the 1m DEM has been available for some time now. Wonder if i can convince Andrea68 to build it if i supply him the dem data.. hmm off i toddle..

I've been working with the new owners of my local circuit in their efforts to get it reopened later this year...this is already out of date, but was a public teaser they wanted to do

Knockhill in Dunfermline Fife, Scotland, 10 miles away from me, Irks me they don't put on transport from the City Bus Station for the likes of BTCC and BSB.
I first saw BTCC action around 1994ish on the American cable channel Speed TV(possible Speedvision back then) Knockhill has utterly ruined DTM and most other forms of sedan/GT racing due to the sedate nature of super smooth tracks. When I was watching drivers using the INSIDE of the curb to pull their FWD cars around the top corner...I was hooked. Would love to witness that in person some day.

I live in the middle between Spa and Zandvoort. These are available for most sims. But I wouldn't really call those local tracks.
Locally there are mainly karting tracks, indoor and outdoor. And I recreated all the kart tracks where we drove myself for rFactor. My son has participated in karting competitions for about ten years, first indoor and later outdoor. I recreated most of the outdoor karting tracks before we actually visited them. If you have worked so intensively on it and driven it virtually a number of times, it is a very special experience the moment you are there in real life for the first time. There you can see what you haven't recreated quite right. And, once recreated is not finished. Racetracks, and certainly karting tracks, are like living things, they are constantly changing.

Although the real track doesn't exist anymore, the Skarpnäck airport circuit in Stockholm, Sweden has been done for GPL. Check out some cool action in various car classes during a race weekend in the mid 1960s...

Today there aren't any racing circuits in the Stockholm area and I think the closest now must be Mantorp Park.

Have you ever visited the old oval track? We get to see glimpses of it during the Italian GP and it has always intrigued me ever since I saw the movie "Grand Prix". It seems to be in pretty bad shape, which is really unfortunate. If I ever go to Milan, I'll visit for sure.
Of course, you can walk on that and try to climb it, some of the straight flat parts of the oval are used as car park in big events, or it was the old club track, i don't remember well. It is not mantained, so it's bad but it's still there and used as a service road. The junctions are pretty bad when you drive it with a car they make you jump a lot.
I worked few times as a steward in Monza for SBK, WEC and other smaller events between 2007 and 2010 and I used to climb the banked part between lesmo and ascari and watch some of the race with a view on the serraglio turn, then they catched me and told me to stop because it was dangerous. I don't know where they are but I could find some photos. During the nights we used to drive it fast and hit the banked part at over 100kmh and it was very scary, the car jumped and fall, it was a unique sensation.
The best was during track days. You could enter the paddock with your bike, go all around the track and access all the grandstands. Maybe if you want to visit Monza and don't want to drive on track that's the best option.
There is a lot of memories to talk about and I don't want to bother, but as i write other memories jump in mind, the Porsche challenge weekend for instance

Another home road course of ours was the Moosehead Grand Prix, lets just say the Citadel Hill street circuit was not good at all, it was a failure.
(Track lasted from 1990-1993)

There was another circuit in the Halifax area, but it was an airport circuit at the mostly unused CFB Shearwater. It has hosted a couple IMSA races and that was about it. There is barely any footage of it and the main piece of media I found was a very low quality highlight reel of an IMSA race in 1995.
(Track lasted from 1994-1995.)

Of course I was not around when those tracks existed so I have no personal connection, but either way it would be neat to see one of these two tracks in a sim. (even though they were unpopular)

Got about half an hour drives to both Jyllandsringen and Ring Djursland.

The latter nicknamed 'mini Nordschleife' in automotive sporting circles and a real drivers' circuit.

Both tracks been available for several sims, mostly as mods, however modern Jyllandsringen available in more of the SimBin sims. Latest now also extremely satisfying classic 60s versions for AC by @Sergio Loro :inlove:
