Is Your Local Track in Sim Racing?

As games add more and more circuits to their line-ups, they must delve into the more niche locations. That is how RaceRoom got my two most local tracks, but what is your most local venue in sim racing?

Too often are motorsport and its fandom limited to the upper echelons of the sport, with Formula One and the WEC taking the limelight of conversations. But many true enthusiasts of racing will just as happily enjoy grassroots, club level racing.

That is why one's local race track can evoke such great emotions. From echoing back to your first days by the catch fence to flashbacks of action taking place just in front of your eyes, local venues hold a great place in our hearts.

So when these perhaps lesser-known racing locations show up in sim racing games, it is a great excuse to get out the credit card or spend a few hours in the sim. Loading up a circuit that you have visited yourself in real life is always a brilliant experience. From driving round and remembering different moments from your memories to opening the free camera and inspecting the creation's accuracy; one can spend hours visiting a virtual recreation. So the question is, which of your local racetracks are in sim racing games? And are they any good?

Editor's Story

You may not want to hear my life's story. But to best explain what I deem my local race tracks, reading part of it is inevitable. As a young boy from England, my family moved to the South West of France when I was six years old. Since then, I have spent my entire life living between Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Unfortunately, compared to the East of the country, my local region is fairly empty when it comes to motorsport. However, it is home to a pair of fantastic venues that are arguably iconic across all of motorsport.

Nogaro Coupe de Paques - Aston GT4.JPG

Aston Martin GT4 fighting at Nogaro, my local track.

From where I am writing this, in the centre of Toulouse, I am just an hour and a half's drive from Nogaro, Circuit Paul Armagnac. Not to be mistaken with that other Paul track, it is a small layout, lined with grass that nowadays is best-known for hosting the Coupe de Pâques, or Easter Cup. Up until 2014, this event featured the Blancpain GT Series. Though before its renaming to the Fanatec GT World Challenge, the main SRO series left my neck of the woods, to be replaced by the FFSA GT. Now, every year at Easter - so this weekend - I attend this popular event to watch GT4 cars battle it out for the National title.

In 2017 and 2018, this French GT4 series featured a pair of opening rounds in the South West of France, the second of which took the paddock to Pau. No, not the twisty Cadwell Park lookalike of Pau-Arnos, but the full fat street circuit that closes roads each May. Ever since I was a young child, I have also visited Pau on a yearly basis, first going to watch the historic event with my parents. But as I grew up, my annual trips focused on the modern Pau Grand Prix, including winners such as Clark and Fangio, no less.

My Local Tracks In Sim Racing

As you can no-doubt tell by now, I am very lucky to see both of my local circuits feature in sim racing. Not only do both Pau and Nogaro get nice third party recreations in Assetto Corsa by @Ginot Team, they are also both available to drive as official content in RaceRoom Racing Experience.

In addition to these two major racing locations, my local area also features the aforementioned Pau-Arnos. A permanent road course not far from the home to the Pau Grand Prix, this circuit rarely hosts racing, instead focusing on track days for petrol heads. But the track does have a fairly useable version for Assetto Corsa available here. Whilst not perfectly accurate, it should help me prepare for any track days I will hopefully take part in this year with my car, also in sim racing.

Are any of your local race tracks available in sim racing? What do you make of their representations?

About an hour away from Brands Hatch so see that a lot obviously in Sims and about half an hour from Lydden Hill which being mainly Rally Cross you don't see too often.

Ahvenisto is the closest one, less than 70 km from where I live.

Keimola would be less than 30 km away if it still existed.

Anyone want to create a mod for Teesside Autodrome? Claims it's the longest kart track in the world, surely there are some technicalities in there. Maybe they mean longest outdoor track? Even then I doubt it. 2.1km, whether that is their longest configuration, I don't know.

I'm lucky to have three circuits and one hill climb all under an hour from home.

Silverstone: Yep this one has been in a ton of sims, no real surprise.
Thruxton: It's been in a few officially and a great mod exists for it in AC
Castle Combe: TOCA Race Driver 3 is the only title I can think of that has had Castle Combe officially, but again a great mod exists in AC for it.
Prescott Hill Climb: Never been in anything officially that I can think of, but again an AC mod exists.

Being in the Milwaukee WI area, I'm very fortunate that almost all of the tracks that I am aware of are in games in one form or another.

Milwaukee Mile (10mi away) - iRacing, AC, rF2
Road America (50 mi away) - iRacing, AC, rF2, RaceRoom, AMS2
Slinger Speedway (20 mi away) - iRacing, NR2003, maybe a few others
Blackhawk Farms (90 mi away) - WIP for AC - Really looking forward to it from @ohyeah2389 (https://www.overtake.gg/threads/the-what-are-you-working-on-thread.126119/post-3751993)

USAIR Motorsports Raceway would technically be the closest to my actual home town is. That is in AC. USAIR is mostly known for drifting but has done some karting in the past. Kart tracks at Road America and Badger Kart Club are missing from the AC roster, but done also by @ohyeah2389 for KPR. Would love to see those two get the AC or rF2 treatment :)

I've lived in Montréal all of my life, so that's a very obvious "yes". I love the aerial shots of the circuit during race weekend, I think it's one of the best looking tracks on the F1 circuit. It reminds me of Albert Park a lot.

And because it is a semi-permanent circuit, it's a public park the rest of the year. People go there to bike, rollerblade, run or just walk. I go there once in a while, it's only a subway ride from home.

It used to be a privately owned track near Spokane(SPO-can, Not Spo-KANE) on the edge of the Washington/Idaho border. Then the county purchased it and on it's opening day a member of the US Air Force rolled his Porsche and killed himself...and the county lost butloads of $$. Finally an Native American tribe from Montana did a land swap with the local town and built a burgeoning Casino(shown in the lower right) and later purchased the track. So now it is called Qlispe` (Q lis PEE) One fellow said he would take a crack at building it for rF2, but I haven't seen anything yet. Oh, and just out of frame is a large medium security prison.

My home track (on the road course side) is Atlantic Motorsport Park in Mill Village, Nova Scotia. Very underrated track in my opinion, but it only mainly hosts club racing nowadays due to its lack of safety standards. There is a GT Legends version that was converted to Assetto Corsa recently, but it would be nice to see an updated version of AMP, as the GT Legends version seems a little outdated and missing a bit of detail. Other than that the GT Legends track is pretty accurate because the track has not changed that much. Its only major event today is hosting a round of the Canadian Superbike Championship every year since 1987.

Nah, elevations are way off. But the original was done before any accurate data existed, can’t blame them.

I have lidar data, it’s on the back burner for now but could be a quick project in the future

I have two tracks, and one street circuit that are all within 2.5hrs of where I live. I've been to all three many times to see races. The tracks are:

Portland International Raceway which has been in several sims, including rfactor2. I've seen Indycar, ALMS, IMSA, as well as many lesser series races there.

Pacific Raceways (former Seattle International Raceway). There was a fairly good mod of this track for the original rFactor. I've been there many times for NHRA, TransAm, and vintage races.

Vancouver BC street circuit. This was a street circuit that ran around BC place. There was a mod of this track in both rFactor, and rFactor2. I saw Indycar there several times.

The nearest track currently near me is Goodwood circuit which I have driven myself and also have it on Assetto Corsa. The hillclimb is also available somewhere

There is many tracks nearby, I won't bother you with smaller/kart ones

Monza is 30km far, I think you already heard of it. I ride there with my bike few times over the years but now it's not possible anymore cause it lacks federation approval for bikes.

Vairano is less than 25 km from home, it's a test track which used to host track days for cars and bikes. There is one version for AC but it does not match with the real one in terms of elevations (there is no elevation changes in the real one) and real track is much more narrow than the virtual one.

If I go east for 60km I get to Franciacorta, a race track that turned to a Porsche Experience Center. I've been there plenty of times but now Porsche does not allow bike track days. The AC version is good.

Driving 60 km south gets you to Tazio Nuvolari Circuit, it just got updated and switched from 2850m to 5260m. Never been there driving or riding cause the track was not interesting, but now it comes with fast sections and it looks like it deserves a ride. Did not find a virtual version yet, but never really looked for it.

The last one is Cremona, I don't know if I can call it local track cause it's 95km far but it's my best choice at the moment considering the cost/fun ratio, except the last 3 turns, I hate the last 3 turns in Cremona. It got an update few years ago and another one this winter cause it will host World SBK for the first time in september.
The AC version I found is ugly and does not give you the feeling the real track gives you.

Franciacorta, Tazio and Cremona are not historical circuits, none of them existed before 2000

Interlagos circuit, hugely available and the São Paulo Indy 300 street circuit used from 2010 to 2014, but this one only exists via mod for rFactor (believe it still available here on Racedepartment).

If counting kart tracks, there are three on AMS2: Tatuapé (Speedland), Interlagos and Granja Viana. This last one in in Cotia, but the area is disputed between both cities prefectures and, basically, most folks racing there are from São Paulo lol

The Indy 300 was five minutes from my home... Speedland is fifteen to third minutes (or more) depending on traffic... the others are a little far than that... but still in the same city.

I've been karting in Granja Viana some years ago, it's such a good kart track
