Last week, Head of Studio 397 Dom Duhan let information slip about development for Le Mans Ultimate in a developer Q&A. Hinting at content and features, the post also featured screenshots of the game's UI.

Now in September, we expect Le Mans Ultimate to release in less than four short months. With that in mind, it is time the community discovered more details about that game.

As luck would have it, a developer Q&A released to the Le Mans Ultimate website late last week with Dom Duhan, Head of Studio 397. Chatting about the strides in development the team is making as well as features fans can expect in the sim, the post is plentiful. But perhaps the most interesting slice of gossip to emerge from the blog are screenshots of the in-game UI.

Le Mans Ultimate UI

Indeed, the game will reportedly be something of an rFactor 2 reskin. This is a game that, throughout its decade-long existence, has infuriated users with its poor interface. But surprisingly enough, one may argue that the screenshots reveal a very polished product that appears easy to navigate, even with a controller.

The post also reveals the car and track selection screens, both of which seem pleasing to the eye. In addition, it looks like the co-op endurance race mode will be an easy-to-understand experience. The setup tweaks look easy to grasp, although we are yet to see the full setup screen.

Finally, one of the screenshots reveals a championship main menu. Whilst the page is certainly a very nice screen to look at, it is the 'Continue Round' button that catches the eye. Seemingly, mid-event saving will be possible in LMU. As yet, we do not know if this will include mid-race saves but being able to turn off one's PC between qualifying and the race is a great start that not every title offers.

How to Race in LMU

Alongside the screenshots, Duhan's Q&A also revealed plenty of information about the various game modes one can expect for Le Mans Ultimate at launch. Indeed, it seems the game will be very involved for both the single player and online racer with lots to do.

Upon the game's reveal, we learnt that it would feature a Race Control mode akin to that in rFactor 2. Essentially an online racing hub, this area will allow racers to organise and take part in their own private events. With organised daily racing and ranking, it will also go some way to challenge the likes of Low Fuel Motorsport or iRacing. So-called Special Events will equally be accessible in this online portal. Expect online endurance races such as the Le Mans 24 to once again be accessible to all.

It is certainly good to know that the game will feature a collection of online racing modes. But this is to be expected in the current age of sim racing. Stepping away from normality however is what appears to be a push to satisfy the casual offline racer. Quick races and championships will be present. The developers are also seemingly working on providing immersion during the longer events.

Indeed, the AI looks like it will play a big part in the experience. Players will be able to choose whether they want to run a full race by themselves or employ AI teammates. In the latter case, the game will simulate each stint should the player choose. Allowing fans to run immersive 24-hour races offline, this is certainly something to get excited about.

Post-launch Support

Ever since the title's reveal, Motorsport Games has been very clear about its long-term support of the project. Indeed, LMU will not be a yearly release, instead following the Assetto Corsa Competizione example. As a result, one can expect a succession of DLC packs next year.

In fact, the game's social media pages have already hinted at the first update fans of the WEC can expect next year. Following the release of several pictures of the Alpine A424 testing at Paul Ricard, the title's Twitter page posted said images whilst mentioning that it will feature in the game in 2024. It seems then that MSG is keeping to its promise of supporting the title throughout the current golden era of sportscar racing.

Here is my Q for the FAQ: if i buy this can i use the cars and tracks in rf2?
I will answer this without any knowledge.
no.
but...
Maybe...
The cars & tracks will be locked tight so No.
but...
I also know the ingenuity of users so Maybe somebody will figure out how to port them. I would suspect the tech would be similar. But I doubt any ports will come quickly.

How do people come to the conclusion that it is just a reskin of rF2? Because the author of this article says so? It's like saying Kartkraft is a reskin of ACC because it runs on the same engine. People allready go crazy when people say that AMS2 is a reskin of PC2.

Fact is, we don't know yet, how much of rF2 will be in LMU as it uses an evolution of the rF2 engine and quite a bit of new tech if you read the article on the website. That it will also offer historic content must have gone unwittnesed with all the superficial reading and free interpretation. :)

That Alpine will be Sooner on Assetto Corsa than in the OFFICIAL game
And we all know that Assetto Corsa is THE platform when it comes to endurance racing with it's wide variety of rules, laserscanned WEC tracks and endurance features that work completely flawless out of the box and AI that masters multiclass racing in dynamic conditions like no other.

rf2 doesn't have a save race feature, nor does it have the official rules of the WEC. If I buy this sim, it will be to get a full WEC game.
rF2 has everything cause it's LE MANS official virutal race in rF2....
LMU is money grab game

what do you mean? you can even continue a race from a replay. Thats a nice feature..

Well the first sign would be that the company has zero dollars to be investing in a whole new engine. The second would be what we have seen from in game shots so far that very clearly look like a slightly polished RF2 gfx engine. (I'm sure screenshots taken at 4pm will look stunning though). I am willing to bet this game will also suffer from the baked in oversteer and the fastest setups will include min tyre pressure and detached rear ARB. MSG can't afford a flop out of the gates here, everyone knows that. They already destroyed a profitable entity in NASCAR with an embarrassing abomination and if this launches with bugs or hiccups all the DLC in the world won't mean a thing. The game launches in December and by February the AC2 hype will peak. All 505 would need to do is launch a multiclass hype promo for AC2 to possibly kill this Lemans game or at least put a world of hurt on it. I am not into any of 505's games at all but their titles have clout and that can't be denied.

AMS2 literally is a re-skinned PC2. I know that hurts peoples feelings and Reiza have done a decent job of fixing the engine, but it is what it is. AMS2 still has carryover issues from PC2 days so a lot of the code is likely the same.

I like rFactor 2 and is my favourite sim to drive. What concerns me is the fact that rFactor struggle a lot on performance even with high end pc's on bad weather or sunset/sunrise with many ai on the track. This sim is meant to have large grids, if performance are like rFactor 2 then probably I will skip it.

I do not believe in adequate AI during FCY, yellow flags, three safety cars in different sectors and red flags...

Yes, the drawback is that you essentially get an entirely refreshed race at whatever point you choose to Resume. So all your damage, tire wear etc magically disappears. (as does the damage the AI may have incurred)
I have read some users have had issues with replays beyond 6hrs, but I haven't been able to verify that. I've done just over 6 hrs, saving my replay after about 1hr each session(during pitstops). I used that to build a 6hr replay that worked just fine.

My guess is that the cars will come as DLC to rf2 but not for a little while until after the release of the WEC sim.

I'm trying to not end up on the hype train for this...

But it really seems like this will be THE place to race Le Mans in 2024...

For what on earth do you need red flags? To get a beer or take a p!ss? :p

I would like to see three SC zones aswell, but S397 could just stick to the feature they have in place in rF2 and would still offer more than the majority of racing sims.If you don't believe in adequate AI during FCY, simply try out rF2. Because in that sim it works.

A "base game", for like 5 years or more ( like RaceRoom ) and adding content in that title regularly ( they should have done it in other games ), a long time ago, F1 EA Codemasters, WRC, maybe a future F-Indy game , Nascar, MotoGP...

RaceRoom did some time with the DTM (despite losing the rights a few years ago), WTCC (despite not carrying every track on the calendar).
Automobilista 2 (by Brazilian Reiza) has the "Stock Car Series" as its priority, but not forgetting the various eras of "F1" with recreated circuits from different eras.

My dream would be for "EA Codemasters" to make an "epic" game, recreating "completely", not just "classic cars" like in past games, but "complete seasons", cars and tracks (we know the problems with copyrights with driver names and car brands, nothing an editor can't solve.

At first, the "community" would choose 1 or 2 seasons from each decade, and with the passage of time "DLCs" could be added with the other seasons, certainly, it would be a true "Career Mode" of Teams and Drivers, when the same was with the seasons from 1950 until 2020 (at least).

A recreation of WRC history (in the same mold) would be welcome, in 2021 Kyloton (made a very interesting game), recreating key moments from the World Cup between (1973-2021), Dirt 1 and Dirt 2 (it was very close to this ).

Who knows, maybe something similar can be done in Moto Gp, Nascar, F-Indy and Indianapolis games, WEC (World of Sports and Endurance Cars), it would certainly be a success in all senses for fans of the "Virtual World of Racing".

Now we have already rFactor 2 with a WEC 2023 mod on steam, so where do we need this new Le Mans Ultimate game for, could one think. Well, for a start, the WEC 2023 mod isn't very good compared to S397 own DLC's. And while I like driving in rFactor 2 a lot, the user interface is still far from perfect. So, if this new Le Mans Ultimate game is rF2 with a better userinterface and a decent WEC pack at the same level of the other S397 DLC's, that would be great. If everyone likes the new userinterface, they should make it available as an update for rF2.

There have been complaints about the User Interface since ISI coded rF1, but, I have never based the purchase of a game or sim on the UI. Once I'm driving I have no interest at all over how many clicks or ugly colors or non-sensical(?) screen arrangements

I'm just excited to see the sim racing market exploding over the last decade with hardware and software seeing strong development, sales and very active communities. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned, even if some of the offerings are not my cup of tea. A WEC-focused sim with a backbone of what many consider to be the most accurate commercially available sim is an exciting proposition. Whether or not they can deliver a complete and enjoyable experience, we'll all find out in due time. As a mostly offline racer with very limited time to commit, the mid-race save feature is a big bonus. If I can only commit a handful of hours a week sitting in the rig, being able to spend a month completing a single endurance race is pretty cool, assuming it's functional and reliable. As much as I love setting up a multiclass WEC-esque race in AC, it's a bummer when I can only complete a small portion of it. Gone are the days where I can spend a whole day and/or night playing.

That Alpine will be Sooner on Assetto Corsa than in the OFFICIAL game
For sure... AC is a great platform for mods... BUT... Most of car mods have physics implanted from Kunos cars with few touches. Currently all hypercars I drove in AC drives almost the same which is not very exciting.
SAVE GAME IN RF2 ALREADY. View a replay and at any point choose 'Resume' off you go!
It's far from functional. It doesn't keep all car states, messes with flags and signs at pit exit if you save in a practice or qualifying and, least and worst, if the replay is large it simply doesn' load.
