WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR IN BAHRAIN THIS WEEKEND?

The long winter break is finally over, Formula One is back! With more drama taking place over the break than an episode of a British Soap show, here is everything you need to know heading into the first race weekend of the year.

The winter break has come to an end. Pre-season testing is complete. The teams, drivers and cars are all rearing to go. But who comes into this weekend with high expectations? Red Bull is the obvious choice, but if free practice is anything to go by at all; it won't necessarily be plain sailing for the Milton Keynes-based outfit.

Is History Due To Repeat Itself?

The Bahrain International Circuit is located just outside the growing metropolis of Sakir. The Grand Prix layout, identical to that used in pre-season testing just one week ago is a 5.4-kilometre track comprised of 15 corners, most of which involve heavy braking zones. This circuit is considered to be one of the more challenging venues for cars and drivers especially due to the heat. A perfect ground for testing and the opening round of the season.

Looking back to the 2014 race, could we see the rejuvenation of Sergio Perez to give Max Verstappen a duel in the desert? Or maybe Charles Leclerc or Lando Norris will be the chosen ones?

Last year in Bahrain, Verstappen and Red Bull cleared off into the distance to claim an easy first win for the Dutchman. His Mexican teammate, Perez, followed him home for a one-two. Mercedes and Ferrari especially will be on a mission to disrupt the Red Bull party in Sakhir this year.

2024 Testing Winners And Losers

Winner: Ferrari
Carlos Sainz came out of Testing in front, but a lot can change between the end of testing and the first race weekend. The Prancing Horses are always strong pre-season, but can they retain this pace consistently throughout the season? Will Sainz be 100% committed come the second half of the season with his future up in the air?

Loser: Alpine
Eighth in the mileage standings, Alpine have kept their proverbial cards close to their chest. Team boss Bruno Famin said they completed their planned programme – however, they clocked up 200 fewer kilometres compared to what they achieved last year.

Winner: RB
Perhaps the dark horse of pre-season testing, RB came out of the gates kicking with Daniel Ricciardo putting the team inside the top five on each of the last two days of running. With a front and rear end adopted from the 2023 Red Bull, there's no doubt that both Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda will be close to the front.

Loser: Aston Martin
Before you get your pitchfork and torch, hear me out... Aston Martin showed a mediocre and inconsistent pace throughout the testing days. However, a car that is designed around receiving upgrades could mean that the best is yet to come for Lawrence Stroll's beloved Astons.

So who do you think Bahrain will favour? Will Red Bull reign supreme again? Or can Ferrari and Mercedes upset the balance of Verstappen's charging bull?

Sainz only 2.5s behind the Red Bull. The gap isn’t that big between the cars its only Max who makes the difference. Be thankful you can witness one of the greatest drivers of all time.
When a secondary driver like Perez can simply cruise by the other cars and control a 2.5sec gap, there is no witnessing driver greatness. I feel bad for Max since he is a great driver. This was not a drive that demonstrated his greatness. This race was a bore and fans are not happy with the season outlook.

I have decided to cure my insomnia by going to a F1 race this year. I am soliciting the community's opinion on which race it should be. There are a couple of caveats.

1. It can't be Miami, Las Vegas, Austin or Monaco.
2. I don't need a long explanation on why YOU would go to that particular race.

Just pick a race and the most votes wins. Thanks,.

Probably u didn't watch the race as it was great with tons of fights and overtakes for the podium and the points. But you maybe live under a rock.

Sorry dude, "overtakes" with DRS are simply no overtakes, it's just a silly measure they've implemented to spice things up artificially for generation Playstation.
Yes and no. DRS is a tactical element like pit stops for refueling or changing tires. But yes, I think it is predictable and boring.

The race wasn't totally boring, but it has reduced the hope of an exciting season.

I do agree with the guys whinging that F1 is rubbish now, and the drivers are managing 'playstation' electronic gizmos that shouldn't be there, today's cars are far too heavy (and removing 60-70kgs next time will still be too heavy) and to be honest I think that were they lighter (much lighter) the power could afford to loose few hundred horses too thereby using less fuel therefore being even lighter, I don't see that cornering 5-6g's on rails is necessary either.
The Aero rules are causing overtaking problems with Mercedes even going so gar as to disturb the airflow to the car behind, legal, but the rules were set to avoid that, and here is a team bringing it back, if the rules simplified the front and rear wings and the cars depended on mechanical grip (tyres) there wouldn't be a need for DRS, and if the engines were less reliant on fancy electronics the cars wouldn't be so predictable and the driver would have more input (yes, I suppose the drivers have to fiddle with the electronics)

But unfortunately progress is fattening, not just for the cars but for the investors too... and they like that!

Fights for the 3rd place may be nice, but it doesn't change the fact that the same driver has won 18 of the last 19 races and that is why so many people are turned off. When the race starts and we already know who will win, the rest feels like some sort of consolation prize.

At some point, the only thing the TV director could focus on was Ricciardo trying to catch Magnussen for 12th place. It's very tough to get excited by that.

Yes i understand but what could be done, it's max making a big difference, it's not even the red bull because with two checo's it would just be perfect, what can we do, bop max's car only?ask him to retire?

what desperation in many messages. The season has only just started. Maybe Max should stop and F1 will become exciting again

It's a shame that some people believe that racing is about close gaps and overtakes only; no wonder why the general interest in motorsports and car culture is on a constant decline. I could write a bible explaining how many bad things I saw in 5 laps, while completely avoiding a mention of the gap Verstappen had on the field.

Today we had an unique opportunity to have the most direct comparison ever possible between F1 and WEC as entertainment products to watch on TV. I couldn't believe how vast the gap was; 5 laps is all I could stand before rushing back to WEC. As Formula One continues to be a money printer, it doesn't matter for them. Me? If there is another similar clash, I know what I won't be watching.

It's not max, it's the car. Who wants to waste hours every weekend trying to guess which Red Bull driver will win with a multiple-second gap?

I watched qualifying, peeked at the results, and knew there was no point watching for the rest of the year.

Thank god for WSB!

Can you tell me the last time a driver won the WDC and wasn't in the best car?

And i agree with you on WSB if you are talking motorbikes, BSB, MotoGP moto2 moto3, best show on earth.............. I'm genuinely sad for anyone who only watches F1....

As a minor diversion from the original subject I agree with you completely!
Round 1 of the WSB was a cracker. Phillip Island is a great place to kick off the season and the
racing was as good as I have seen.
The first round of MotoGP will answer many questions despite ridiculous 'Aero' packages that are dragging the bikes into an 'EffWun' downward spiral. As Casey Stoner said recently, 'Take all that s..t (aero, holeshot devices, ride height adjustments etc.) off the bikes and get back to real machines.

People are paying a subscription to watch stuff like this .. people in charge of the camerawork should be fired immediately. What happened to the idea of just having a wide high angle to see everything clearly in one shot ?

The gap of Max with the others (including Perez) was shocking because he must have been cruising after lap 3. Seeing that he put the fastest lap with still 15 laps to go and that the second best lap from Leclerc much later in the race was still 1,4s slower, I'm afraid the dominance will be at least the same as last year.

But if you can put your mindset of the championship and look at what's happening in the rest of the field, it can be a great season as three teams and Perez are close to eachother. And the other teams except Alpine will also have great battles for ot get into the points.

And how about the battles between teammates this year: Sainz/LeClerc, Russel/Hamilton, Norris/Piastri and Tsunodi/Ricciardo. That will be very interesting.
