BeamNG.drive is a wide-open sandbox with lots to do. We want to know: What are your favourite activities in the soft body crash-a-lot game?

Each month, BeamNG.drive is one of if not the most popular games on Steam. In fact at OverTake, we keep a regular eye on the charts. This sandbox title always appears at the top end of most-played list. But why exactly is it so popular?

Well, the simple answer is that there is just so much to do in the game. Offering a variety of open-world maps, each with their own challenges, races and easter eggs, there is a lot to explore. Furthermore, the car list is vast, with each model featuring a plethora of modifications and unique characteristics. Finally, third party mods available for the game provide a whole other dimension to the title.

With so much to do, it sometimes seems difficult knowing where to start. So we are asking you, the community, what you enjoy doing most in BeamNG.drive. You can get in touch via the comments section, on our social media channels, or in our Discord community. Let us know what you enjoy doing. Tell us what your favourite maps, car and mods are. Above all, let us know why you keep coming back to this hidden gem of a title.

What I Do in BeamNG.Drive

Personally, I was always intrigued by this sandbox crash-tastic title. However, it was only recently that I made the plunge and purchased it. In fact, I believe I got it for a reduced price in the last Spring Steam sale – that certainly felt like a good deal.

In fact, that good deal felt even greater as time went on, and I discovered what the title truly offers. Originally seeing BeamNG as a simple soft-body crashing title in which all you do is spend a few hours pretending to crash, I soon found out it is so much more. Upon loading it up, I realised that several maps are available to explore freely, each with different activities.

BeamNG.drive is far bigger than I ever imagined. Image credit: BeamNG

Rock climbing, top speed runs, rallying, circuit racing and deliveries. I have spent a lot of time taking part in these challenges, always trying to improve my time. What is so great about the title is that these challenges are far from easy. Unlike other games releasing in recent times, one must work hard to get even achieve one out of three stars, let alone get a full bag.

The off-road driving challenges and rally courses are certainly my favourites. In fact, I see the game as a brilliant rallying simulator. A few months ago, I even pointed out that BeamNG.drive is the perfect base for a Dakar Rally simulator; far better than the actual title, Dakar Desert Rally. The off-road physics feel very understandable whilst the tarmac feel is very smooth.

My favourite map of the game has to be the most recent Johnson Valley location. A wide open desert with very few tarmac roads, it is what inspired the Dakar motivation. This is a map that provides many surface types from deep sand to bolder-filled rock fields and gravel paths.

However, the thrill of diving through the narrow roads of Italy is also very fun. In fact, simply driving around any area of any map in BeamNG.drive is enjoyable. The driving physics are very pliable and make you want to keep going. Any time I can treat a road like a rally stage, I will continue driving that same stretch for hours.

I am yet to dive into the third party content. However, that is certainly something I will have a look at soon.

I know there is so much I am missing out on in this game. But with the shear size of it, it is impossible to truly touch everything. Therefore, what would you advise I focus on next time I boot up the game?

Game with lost identity, doesn't know what it wants to be.

I have been playing this game for just over a decade, yet I still don't enjoy it. The graphics are mediocre, the FFB is lifeless, and there's very little structure to the gameplay.

I messed around with the new career mode yesterday and it wasn't very enjoyable either. :(

Graphics are mediocre? Are you sure you aren't playing 2018 build of the game? As to gameplay structure, BeamNG is a sandbox. A perfect one at that. You can do literally everything: drag racing, drifting, time attack, rallying, rock crawling/jeeping, cargo carrying, missions, train driving, piloting an aircraft... All with pretty realistic physics and soft-body crash physics. Devs are currently working on adding rubber temperature and deterioration to make physics even more close to life.

You are being sarcastic, but this is very rare case of the "universal" game that tries to encompass every aspect of driving and truly excels at almost everything it touches. ESPECIALLY at multiplayer. No greater fun can be had online with friends.

Fun department is what tryhard simulators suck at.

The game is pretty fugly.

Screenshots aside (which aren't anything special) the game is ugly on many levels when in game.
You fail to admit that graphics have improved immensely since 0.25 version. You also gloss over the fact that the game is still in alpha state. Unlike Turn10 Studios that have spent 6 years waxing their turd by copypasting what everyone has seen since Forza Horizon 2 over and over again, BeamNG devs do fantastic job at making their game better and better with every new update. Also, BeamNG devs do that on a limited budget. They care about their user base and overdeliver when it gets to promises. Have anybody seen Forza Motorsport 8 trailer? It looks fantastic! Now, go watching fresh reviews on the game. It looks worse than 2018 Forza Horizon 4 and one can only wonder where those money on next-gen project have gone...

The most important part is that unlike all these fancy AAA projects with inflated budgets, BeamNG.drive is fun to play. When you play, you forgive the game's minor rough spots here and there. Because it's not a major project with seven-digit sum in the bank account and smaller tightly knit teams have proven they're more effective when it comes to making stuff compared to studios run by corporate greed.

I can bet when Forza Motorsport comes out, Race Department will get glowing red from all the negative reviews on the game. The game will be much uglier than shown in trailers, will be riddled in bugs, will run badly even on top-of-the-line computers due to crap optimisation and will lack many important features that make the game fun to play. BeamNG on the other hand is constantly improving by fixing bugs, implementing new features (0.30 has brought VR support), getting better optimisation and becoming more and more beatiful to look at despite being unable to compete head-to-head with Forza Horizon 5, for example.

Don't even start comparing the game to dedicated racing sims with their 2009 graphics... People play iRacing and don't give a flying f@#k about graphics. :D It is not the most important aspect when it comes to gamer retention.

Holy hell, what a complete waste of your time. Not even going to read that

The game is lacking visually by current standards but also suffering from multiple visual defects, including excessive pop-in, dust , foliage and water coming through the car models, bizarre shadows, and edges so jagged they could cut your eyeballs.

That's just what it is, and 8 paragraphs of text don't change the visuals as they are, Nor will screenshots when anybody and everybody can just fire up the game and experience them as they are.

The game succeeds on multiple levels despite its lack of polish, direction, user interface and visual qualities,.

wait, what has this game got again?

My favourite thing in BeamNG was to do time trials and compare different cars in them, also later I started creating my own time trial tracks. This really took most of my gaming time because its just so fun to pop in for a few time trial battles and have a laugh after crashes:] But now with the career mode evolving this is like BeamNg 2.0, I think it has massive potential and made me love it twice as much. Also I am really amazed that game with such good physics and unforgiving handling was the most played racing game on Steam, really gives hope.

Geez. I answered your question in the comment above. You claimed not to want to read it and now you are questioning... What a loser. I don't believe you are 49 years old. Such people as you are impossible to please. You are going to "ignore" list.

All I want is
1. More support from modders
2. Multiplayer support
3. Its own section here on RaceDept

BeamNG drive works best on PS5/XSX-tier hardware.

It even has its own movie!

Are you high?

Anyhow, a novel and a picture show. First time for everything I suppose..

Nothing hardcore about me, and I'm a big supporter of Beamng. I'm just not deluded about the quality of its visuals.

Clearly the success of both iracing and Beamng are both strong evidence that graphical fidelity doesn't make or break a game.

Lol why would you continually do something for 10 years, that you dont enjoy?

Haha I know the feeling.

I could never understand the ffb, until I selected it to be reversed, and bingo, instant and clear communication from the wheel allowing me to know where the front wheels are just by feel.

It is also quite subdued until you hit something, then the FFb tries to kill you, Just like my real car. Driving around the roads, very little feedback, hit a curb, rips itself out of my hands.
Yup that did the trick for me too.
And maybe my memory is doing tricks on my, but AFAIR when I booted up BeamNG first time (years ago) with my simple G27 wheel I didn't remember any issues here, however loads with my T300 and my Moza too if not setting to reverse.

Apart from that I don't do that much in the crash emulator (my
brother-in-law's boys had it as their main occupation as 7-10 year olds 3-4 years ago)

I like the rally content though, just having fun going offroad like a much better version of a Dakar game. And then rally cars on the dedicated tracks, which for me reminds me of a modern version of (now I forgot the name, +20 years old game) just with good ffb.
And then, half a year ago, a more decidedly classic sim, which some of the recognized sim YouTubers have also praised for the promising development here.

So I have great enjoyment in the game/sim.
Especially when I don't think about using it as a classic sim.

*edit*
and latest also enjoyed the VR part, too. Quite good VR performance imo.

I personally like the fact that there is no console-like career mode, achievments, or “unlocking” forced on you. Those sorts of things...to the degree they are present...are simply your choosing whether or not to participate in them. Maybe I’m tainted by my experience with Wreckfest, but I can imagine it would have been very easy to choose the full-up console style with Beam.NG if the devs had wanted to.
BeamNG is IMO the opposite to micro transactions/Pandora's Box/arcade career games.

BeamNG is the sandbox to end all sandboxes.

And I pretty much like it that way :)

I find the UI impossible and the absence of action replays a big barrier. It's damn good fun when you get something appealing going on. The crashes can be superb and as folks have said the crawling stuff is rather top notch. It still feels pretty shonky though.

I played some demos years a go, and have no idea what it includes originally if buy it now, i have always loved crashing since from kid. So i have been interested, but havent buy it. Seen often videos from Youtube and have though most of those are mods but i dont know. I dont have time and dont want to mess with mods anymore. Just have a go and play, with controller and so on. Seeking the fun side of playing, and ditch the seriousness, which makes mostly just angry, and have bad effect in real life, and so... This is getting out of hand already... lol
Sounds as if you'd like it. It's improved a lot over last few years. It has a mod manager so you can D/L mods from within game and it handles the install etc. So, there's not much messing about. And you don't need mods to have plenty of fun in it. It's a nice escape from the grind of racing to be as fast as possible which, I agree, gets FFFFuuuuuuuu

My favourite thing to do in BeamNG, is to install BeamMP.
Get a group of friends, set a list of 'build regulations', then get everyone to design a vehicle in Automation Game to these specs. Use their excellent exporter system to export the cars into BeamNG. And then have our own, fully fledged, racing championship at various tracks with the cars we have built with our own fair hands. May the best driver and constructor win!
