Massarutto: Assetto Corsa Competizione’s Nordschleife Deal “A Surprise”

Massarutto - Assetto Corsa Competizione’s Nordschleife Deal A Surprise Rd.jpg
Assetto Corsa Competizione’s creator, Kunos Simulazioni, was unaware of SRO’s deal to include the Nordschleife. Marco Massarutto explains the decision to push the second Assetto Corsa back to accommodate the much-requested DLC.

“Someone pass the paper bag; I appear to be hyperventilating!”

“My wallet is ready”

A smattering of responses from Assetto Corsa Competizione fans posted to social media in the wake of confirmation, at last, that the venerated German circuit will be headings to the sim racing platform in a matter of days.

Since the monkeys were walking around monoliths at the start of 2001: A Space Odessey (or Barbie, take your pick), virtual racers have been requesting the Nürburgring Nordschleife for Kunos Simulazioni’s official GT World Challenge platform.

The answer was always a simple ‘no’, because the track was not part of SRO’s calendar, and Competizione’s content must fit into Stéphane Ratel’s plans.

But, in July 2023, that changed, when a partnership was announced to bring the 24 Hours of Nürburgring into the SRO-affiliated Intercontinental GT Challenge series.

Suddenly, it was possible.

There was just one problem – Kunos was putting the finishing touches to its GT2 pack and working flat-out on ‘Assetto Corsa 2’.

“My reaction was ‘Oh my god, not now, not now,’” chuckles Executive Manager at developer Kunos Simulazioni, Marco Massarutto, to OverTake-RaceDepartment.

“This was our initial reaction because our workflow is on a schedule, and we didn’t know anything about the announcement. It was even a surprise to us, even though we have worked with the SRO for many years. They wanted to make a surprise, and they did!”

Having the ability to implement such a fêted venue is one thing, pulling the trigger on the resources required to create it ahead of the next big project for Kunos, is quite another.

It required a significant interruption in planning, to the point where Kunos’ parent company Digital Bros issued a dedicated press release explaining the shift:

“The team at Kunos Simulazioni is completing the development of the new DLC for PC and consoles and, for that purpose, the next version of Assetto Corsa will be postponed,” it read.

“We had a 10-minute meeting, just to decide ‘What do we do?’ following the announcement,” recalls Massarutto.

“And it was a very short meeting, because after all these years that we say to our audience that ‘We’d like to create the Nordschleife, but it’s not in the GT World Challenge calendar’, now it is, we must do that.”

So, with that in mind, it will just be a case of ripping out the model from the now decade-old original Assetto Corsa and placing it within Competizione, right?

“It’s not a pain, it’s a privilege, but definitely, it is not a copy and paste operation from the first AC, because a lot of things have changed, and the structure of Competizione is completely different,” explains Massarutto.

“The production of the Nordschleife has been very, very, complex, but in the end, we are absolutely proud of the final result.

“Driving a GT car in Competizione around there in the day or at night, with the rain, I think is a thrilling experience. Thanks to the Nordschleife, ACC can express itself in the very best way.”

Sim racers won’t have to wait too much longer to experience it, either. As we reported on 13th March, the ‘Green Hell’ DLC will be available on PC (with consoles to follow) on 1st April 2024.

The Second Assetto Corsa

Once that is released, speculation is then set to ramp up for the launch of ‘Assetto Corsa 2’, listed in the studio owner’s Digital Bros half-year earnings report this week as “scheduled for Summer 2024.”

It remains something that publisher 505 Games and Massarutto are extremely tight-lipped about:

“To be brief, the codename [‘AC2’ is used in several game files and error notices for ACC] that was given to Competizione was wrong.

“The new Assetto Corsa is going to follow what we did with Assetto Corsa ‘1’.”

“Yet, it is not just a sequel, it is much, much, more. It’s definitely not a spin-off like Competizione.”

The Nürburgring Nordschleife in the original Assetto Corsa

Tantalising. Following the GT2 DLC, then the Nürburgring 24H Pack plus whatever is in store for ‘the new AC’, this year is pivotal for the franchise, something that its leader is acutely aware of:

“I would say that 2024 will be very important for us, because we have a lot of releases, like the new Assetto Corsa and the Nordschleife DLC – these are huge things.

“So, we are trying to do our best to make our audience very happy. Hopefully, we will manage it, but we need to wait and see.”

To be honest, the only "surprise" I wish for from this DLC is better AI.
Well, not better, just back to the way it was before the british DLC. AI in its current state will be absolute mayhem on the Nords (although right now it behaves awfully similar to most online drivers so I guess it's good practice :roflmao:)

Gr8 news about Nord, a must buy for me for sure. My only hope that it hasn't pushed AC2 back too much, hopefully 3-4 months at the outside, which hopefully means it can land on or before December...

Tbh, AC2 will be huge, bigger than ACC and with how well that game has done in revenue it would make good business sense to increase the studio staff to enable them to react quicker in future and support AC2 DLC packs in a more timely fashion.

Interesting times ahead...!!

You clearly expect way too much from AC2, especially at the beginning.

It's not going to be as bad as AMS2 was... That much I can say for certain...

Might be at worst where AMS2 is now... As Kunos won't be cleaning up someone else's mess...

Renato lives in your head. You compare everything to AMS2, always bashing AMS2 along the way. Good on Renato for being able to live in such cramped quarters.

Nah Ian Bell is the real problem there... I've got investor PTSD from the WMD experience...

He didn't fix the lemon that is Madness before handing off to Renato... So now Renato's product has the same issues...

This particular comparison is about where AC2 is going to be on release... And AMS2 is still the most buggy experience for me... It was far worse when it came out, AC2 shouldn't have those problems and if it does it'll be a major issue for Kunos...

In all fairness, Based on the sales history of the Assetto series, I cant see any justification for AC2 hitting the market in anything less then a ready state. And by that I mean fully featured and actually running.

They are market leaders at this stage, so they really do need to lead.....

With most of their fans not having any patience for the development pace of other titles... They're going to have an interesting time on release...

It's got to be at least where LMU is with the caveat of "VR coming later as we are improving it" with anything missing on release... It won't be VR that's just an example...

Personally I don't expect it to be in any more of a ready state than LMU... But there's every chance it'll be another year or 3 before it's a fully featured title... I don't expect a career mode or anything like that until most of the DLC is out...

I am keen to take a look under AC2 to see what's going on for the modding world... As that's going to explode or have a lot of people going to other titles for modding... As so many modders are just waiting for AC2 rather than looking elsewhere...

I am sure we won't have many major physics or FFB issues, graphics engine on the other hand can be a concern, depends on how much they've tried to improve the original one with the single light source, no rain, or night support.
There were some speculative posts that Ilya was doing some work for them, don't believe it's actually true considering how badly he violated AC EULA, but anything is possible.

If it ships without VR I'm going full pork chop.

I also expect structured online/multiplayer, Daily challenges, an integrated Ai engineer and hell, throw in a career.

All on top of a massive array of high quality content.

Well, we know it will be early access release..sooo...

Ah right well, even more of a reason to give it some time to breathe...

Early Access is the right decision whilst they work on engine related game issues...

I can't wait for the nords , my wallet is ready, and triple screens came in the mail last week.

A lot of people are talking about AC2 but fail to realize that if its not able to be modded people will still use AC1 without a doubt and AC2 will suffer heavily because of it. The Mod Community is why AC1 is so popular. I have never even ran vanilla AC1 but once by accident when i clicked play in steam. Otherwise I always have used Content manager. Hell this very site i found out about purely from looking for mods for AC. IMO if AC2 doesn't have access to be modded it'll fail and no one will use it but for the first few months just to check it out, than everyone will go back to AC1. I hope it is able to be modded unlike ACC. But I'm not excited until I hear yes/no on mods for AC2. Once that answer is confirmed 100% than i'll decide how I will view AC2.

I really doubt it, look at ACC. With enough original content who would want questionable quality mods from unknown sources, fantasy physics, etc.
There are so few that really worth it that Kunos can just hire these guys, which to my knowledge they did already.

But no doubt AC, or whatever Frankenstein monster it's become, will still enjoy large user base for years to come.

These two quotes make no sense.

AC1 to AC2 by adding more cars / tracks / new in house graphics engine.

Unless this is gonna be adding many angles like ability to race in gravel / snow etc
something like forza horizon angle not just circuit racing.

The modding scene in AC1 to this day is crazy strong.

So if they added better graphics engine / better modding tools and ability to race in different terrain types. Modders would follow imo.
