Gran Turismo 7 Is Here - What Are Your Impressions?

Gran Turismo 7 Is Here What Are Your Impressions So Far.jpg
The long wait is over: Over four years after GT Sport and over eight years after its mainline predecessor, Sony and Polyhpony have finally released Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation 4 and 5! The highly-anticipated GT7 comes with more than 400 cars and 33 tracks and promises exciting new features like the GT Sophy AI for later addition.

As always, the excitement for a new GT had been bulding especially in the last few weeks before the release - fans of the franchise finally got to breathe a sigh of relief on March 4th. GT7 races to consoles around the world with a big single-player campaing including the return of used car dealerships, potentially game-changing AI in GT Sophy in the future and a broad range of cars from the modern day all the way back to the beginnings of the automobile.

As Gran Turismo 7 is a massive game just like its predecessors, it is almost impossible to offer a full review on release day - however, @Mike Smith is already working on it and will share his thoughts about the latest installment of the Gran Turismo franchise at a later time.

This brings you into the picture: Let us know your first impressions and reviews of the game in the comments! We are excited to see what the RD community thinks of Gran Turismo 7 and how they play the game. Share if GT7 met your expectations or maybe even exceeded them, your favorite moments so far - anything that comes to mind after your first hours with the game to create a first community review.

Pros: - GT Mode/career mode! Brings back all the joy from the previous games, but packaged a little differently.
- Physics are great for the most part. The cars all feel very unique, and the driving is challenging but very rewarding. A couple small issues with the physics do not outweigh the positives
- Depth of customisation/tuning. The old tuning system is back and better than ever, with various performance modifications, aero parts and widebody kits for those interested.
- Graphics look absolutely phenomenal, even on the PS4 Pro version. and the Scapes mode takes it to a whole other level.
- GT Cafe is a weird surprise at first, but once you get into it, the way it presents cars and their history is unparalleled. Wonderful addition for some car enthusiasts.
- Great wheel/controller parity. Both inputs are fantastically implemented, and both wheel and controller feel fantastic to use. Force feedback on my T300RS has some small issues, but overall is a positive experience.
- Absolutely phenomenal weather system. The weather and track grip makes for some very dynamic races, and things like dry lines in the wet make crossover periods very interesting in races.
Cons: - The GT Cafe can feel a little linear and hand-holdy compared to previous games, and restricts the freedom of progression that we have become used to.
- Some small physics abnormalities make for some funny, annoying and confusing accidents, but isn't too frequent that it affects enjoyment.
- Not a great deal more content than GT Sport. Not the biggest issue, but it can feel repetitive if you've played a lot of GTS.
- Microtransactions. A very minor negative, as I feel this is the least offensive implementation of MTX I've seen in a modern game. The option to buy Credits is almost hidden, nevermind advertised or encouraged by the game, and doesn't affect gameplay or progression AT ALL.
Overall Gran Turismo 7 is a top tier game, and I think it will only get better as it ages. There are some small hitches here and there, but the game overall has incredible polish, and plenty of content to keep us entertained until they start releasing new cars and tracks. As a long time Gran Turismo fan, this gets the seal of approval from me.

Pros: - the cars are well detailed...
- Driving is okay for a sim-arcade game
- It's nice for a guy who doesn't have a steering wheel
Cons: - Micro transactions! The scandal of this video game! Anti sports on the live, shameful!
- Driving is worthless compared to Assetto, ACC, AMS2, IRacing, rFactor2, even PC2 is better on computers.
- At the controller it's not as good as Forza Motorsport 7! And the live sucks compared to Forza. Soon Forza 8, right? A better arcade sim for consolers, but playable for computer fun.
- AI sucks, just like before! Innuendo that it could be corrected by a new revolutionary AI, but only promises, in the meantime people are paying and waiting, for a very long time in my opinion.
- "the real driving simulator" hahaha!
- Buying an expensive console steering wheel is great, but when there's a new console coming out, do we throw the steering wheel away?
- No VR planned, all good PC simulations are playable in VR, sometimes not at the top, it's true, but sometimes it's magic... like on AMS2 :-) which is so much, magically better than it is said "driving simulator"
In short, I don't like this game at all, especially because there are the micro-transactions that I find extraordinarily shameful and discriminatory for live races. That's my opinion.
The progress is extremely disappointing compared to what was promised.
Incredible that after so many years GT7 is still so close to GT1, I can't understand the enthusiasm of the fans (fan who comes from fanaticism)?

Pros: -Waaaay better physics than all GT's before it especially when using a wheel
-Works flawlessly on a PS5 with a drivehub and a $15 controller in order to use my CSW 2.5, v3 pedals, shifter and handbrake!
-Gorgeous and flawless framerate on a PS5
-Has everything I missed, when playing Sport
-Progression lends itself to a true CarPG with all the excessive grinding needed, to get the "best" cars
Cons: -Doesn't support super ultrawide
-Doesn't support VR (yet)
-Doesn't support Triples
I've played through every iteration of the GT franchise (even the PSVita version) and I can say that this brings me back to my all-time favorite GT3: A-Spec.

I love the story mode, with all it's oddities and smooth jazzy feel. I love the enormous time sink this will be, to get even close to 100% completion. I love that I can use my full-on cockpit setup with all my Fanatec hardware (of which none is compatible with a PS-anything with a %$5 3rd party controller and a $90 drivehub.

Is it a sim? Of course not, but it comes closer (IMO) than any other previous iteration in the GT franchise. If it had a fully customizable cockpit view and AMS2/RF2 physics, I would likely forget to eat/drink/shower for days at a time.
Pros: -Runs really good and looks good (especially the PS4 version)
-great choice of cars (yes i know it’s limited but updates will come with more content)
-the revised GT classic tracks are really nice and add a new twist to it love deep forest.
-the AI has definitely been tuned up and really makes the fighting enjoyable
-sport is the same as GT sport but it was already pretty fun to begin with
-license test difficulty is balanced well but def is easy with a wheel….till you get to super
-the dynamic rain with the wet line and the puddles adds that bit of realism and twist.
-the cockpit view movements adds a bit of realism’s after driving IRL.
Cons: -GT Cafe. I dont have an issue with the cafe that much its a very good lil story mode to it but for a GT fan like myself i wanna jump right into arcade mode and try the new tracks out. But i definitely understand the reason for it.
-Dirt tracks need a major facelift i felt like they really didn’t put the time in to actually improve this from GTS
-micro transactions are annoying but i like to work for the grind.
-music rally is weird like i kinda get it bit it was overhyped
-music tracks im sorry suck like I enjoy all of the rock songs but they could have really brought back some classic songs from all the GTs
-STOP WITH THE SPACED ROLLING START I WANT TWO FILE ROLLING STARTS OR STANDING STARTS
With all its flaws i still give GT7 a really good review it makes up from 6 and sport but it has alot of room to improve itself. It may not be the complete nostalgia trip i grew up with but it does keep me coming back.
ROOMS FOR IMPROVEMENT
-Qualifying for single player (it needs to happen)
-The option to add your own music (attach Spotify to use your playlist for menu and race)
-make every track have day/night and rain. (Needs to happen)
-better flag rules (full course cautions and pace car)
dont be hating on a game that just came out this isn’t battlefield 2042 updates always comes
Pros: It is kinda fun.
Cons: A rehash of GT Sport, to much BS to get content, cars and tracks etc.
I got it on the 4th and got all the licenses and today I got up to book 12. Still do not have Daytona, my favorite track. The whole storyline is OK for some but not me. I think developers should offer more than one version, one for people that want to go through all that BS and one for others that just want to get into it. I have been doing sims a long time and don't need to take a driving test. Kinda wish I had not spent the 60 bucks.

Comments

at least cars feel less robotic, but GT7 will be improved with updates. GTS doubled the content and I expect that it will have at least 600 cars by 2024. Also, it isnt charity like Forza which gives you 100 vehicles by 5 hours of gameplay. Real simulator it isn't that's for sure, its simcade (definetly not cadesim). "Real driving simulator' is overblown and even dangerous claim, especially since there is no mechanical damage that is convincing, and feeling of speed isn't presented good enough. For a game that basically babies can play, they might get wrong expectations. I cant remember anyone that died in a car crash because of inaccuarcies in games though.

I think that full simulation like Assetto Corsa, iRacing and so on is possible, even with fun or arcadish game modes like Coffee Break. But its not easy, GT7 does latter well but former not so much as advertised.

Enthusia for its time was a very good simulation, but a bad release date and lack of engaging career mode killed it. Maybe if it was released on PC it could have competed against GT and actually be a competitor like Forza but in physics department, not in latest cars. Thats another problem, GT lacks competition Forza is too soft (or was since next one will be more realistic reboot?)
For Enthusia Professional Racing, unfortunately, Konami appears that they don't care about the majority of their video game IPs as they turn them into pachinko slot machines including the Metal Gear series or either they abandon them but retain the ownership.

So it's very doubtful for this video game IP to be resurrected in the near future.

Edit: To me, Konami should sell Enthusia Professional Racing IP to a different 3rd party company.

Totally non-console driver writing here.

Just quite curious on how 'sim' GT7 really is, put in relation to how the big consumer gaming sites' own reviewers speak it up as "the best sim racing game", but not quite so detailed about the sim part, but alot about graphics performance, a bit about engine sounds and then a huge load on game music and in-car music playlists (which sounds pretty much arcade to me), as well as partly how the manufacturer itself sells the product as 'sim'.

So how is the e.g. the physics model compared to GT Sport and console version of ACC?

And compared to PC sims? I.e. both modern and older sims?

If using proper sim rig, do the sim driver experience an authentic immersion?
Are you able to feel switching from one type of car to another? Or is the FFB response more or less the same, only letting the engine sound do the "difference"?

How about tyre modelling?
Do you feel tyre wear in endurance sessions? (if that even is a possibility?) 3 point tyre modelling like rF2 or maybe in line with GTR2's 16 year old model (which IMO is still quite good)?

How about car setup? I've seen screens and short vids, but do tuning the parameters have a realistic effect on track?

Is pit entry closed like PC3 or is pit work- and strategy a possibility?

GT7 leaves a ton of questions open when the game is associated with 'real sim'.
I could imagine what if GT7 was a full sim, then the controller optimization will end up being a total disaster then the console players will complain about it.

So that's why the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport series' respective developers decided to end up as Simcades instead.

Let's be honest, many of us (including myself) haven't actually driven any of these cars in real life, and fewer still have raced or time attacked. So this insistence that a console game is automatically 'simcade' comes off as petty, even without me once again pointing out that a game cannot simultaneously be simulation and arcade yet that is what the term suggests.

Mechanical damage? Can be turned on in custom races and lobbies. Too controller friendly? ACC is playable on pad too and I don't see anyone dissing it. Bad physics? Show me your racing resume that makes you a guru on that.

Premium
Has anyone seen a menu for adjusting the trigger sensitivity? i’ve found the section where you can adjust the strength of the resistance but not for general sensitivity. With all assists off on some cars you barely touch the brake and it’s instant lockup.

I am a bit disappointed that there is barely any new real life tracks compared to GT Sport, it seems to me a bit like low effort on that front.
The same goes for them licensing the latest car models. I mean for a mainline GT game i woud expect they would have way more cars since 2018 on, but most of the car models are by now like 6-7 yrs old while the latest have been out for a couple of years already.
For example: Not having the 720s is not a good look. Not having a 992 Porsche is not a good look. Not having the latest A45 AMG, Golf 8 GTI, M5, E63, RS5/6 is a bad look and so on.

having said that, i love the visuals and the fact that it is indeed a classic GT game and i would love to play it.
but i dont have a console and would not buy another DD base just for one game.
so i hope this game will eventually find its way to PC in the not too distant future.

For those who say this game has bad physics in their opinion, it's obviously the users who really hate Simcades, so it's their problem, not the developers and publishers.

It's like saying table tennis is bad and toyish compared to tennis.

i agree, if someone judges Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport physics and ffb with the measurement stick of rf2, acc, iracing and so on, then they clearly don't 'get it'.
i love my simracing but i do love also a good simcade that does ton of other things more right than any simracer could ever do.

Yeah, I still love Simcade for nostalgic vibes.

So I did managed to get it earlier then expected.

I really like it so far! feels like really nice improvement over GT sport. I was bit worried that with dynamic time of day / weather, the visuals will be bit worse like they were in GT6 (dynamic) vs GT5 , which was static but it's not, or at least I didn't notice it

road detail looks amazing ! the quality of the textures, the small details / breakups etc.

Physics seems to be nicely improved as well. Of course it starts to get wierd , once you start customizing your car with all those tuned pieces , which doesn't really surprise me, with all the various combination of all the elements, it must be quite tricky for physics to work well in all the possible combinations

GT Sport was getting a ton of updates as time went, so I'm expecting the same for GT7 as well
I think this is the best Gran Turismo to date

I recently bought GT sport to see if I liked SIM racing games. I did so bought most of what's out for PC plus a wheel.

I've bought the disc version of GT7 for PS5. Got it installed but not played it yet. Looked at a wheel set-up guide. I was surprised to only see 2 settings for the wheel. Unlike ACC which had lot's. I'm hoping it's a good experience with the wheel.

Went to a friends house and played it on a PS5, 4k tv, while using a Thrustmaster T248. Graphics are beautiful and it drives pretty 'simmy' IMO.
Didn't have time to compare different tire compounds or even touch any of the setup sliders so don't really have any idea of just how deep the physics go but it felt really nice to drive. The cars rear ends break loose under heavy breaking, maybe even too much so, and slides were generally a bit more difficult to catch than in Assetto Corsa. Small 'drifts' are fairly easy to control, at least in some cars, and braking points felt to be pretty close to where they are in AC while in comparable cars. Didn't really have time to deep dive into the nuances (or lack thereof) in the tire model since we were running mostly 3-5 lap races and switching out driving after each race.
The lack of a damage model coupled with the ability to 'wall ride' is where the 'arcade' part of 'simcade' show up the most.

My first impressions are that it is a fun car game to drive and it made my buddy go buy a $400 wheel and start actually learning how to properly drive after only playing the game for a couple hours.

For me the series is dead since they introduced this "start at the back and overtake all the cars within a couple of laps"-BS.

Because of this the very core mechanic of the game is broken and I can't get my head around why people still buy GT games.

Currently stuck in License purgatory trying to get gold in every lesson and final exam. Stuck on IB-10 missing out by a 100th of a second. Annoying when you think you've just nailed it and your own ghost suddenly appears in front of you right before the finish line proving you're not going to beat your previous best  The celebration or commiseration incidental daytime TV like music winds me up (who even likes that stuff) despite the menu music being turned off. Trying to perfect your license means you hear it A LOT.

Overall, it's been a mixed bag for me so far playing on the PS4 Pro. The frame rate performance has struggled in some events (I too hate those start at the back 'races'). A lot of the cars I've driven suffer from a lot of understeer with my CSL Elite wheel, though maybe I've got it set up wrong. Playing it on the G9 ultrawide is a bit weird with black side bars but I can live with that.

I'm going to stick with it though as being a bit of a completist makes me want to get through it and collect all the things.

loving it so far, playing on controller with my son and some others, we arent bothered if its a sim/arcarde or 'simcade' its just good fun with plenty of content. If folk then get the bug and move onto 'proper' sims then that also good. Too much dissing a game without even playing it. It looks great on ps5, plays great and is just a very pick up and play title.

We set up a few online lobbies at the weekend, plenty joined and yeah there was a few lagging, the occasional idiot ramming everyone but it was great fun and I havent enjoyed a title like this for a long while.

Playing on PS5, spent the weekend playing with my 10 year old grandson (he loves it), we had a LOT of fun doing the licence's, mission's, and going through the cafe story.
Grandson spent quite some time in the livery editor, and the scape's mode, he found that part really absorbing / interesting.
I'm very impressed with the overall package, reminded me of why i pre-ordered the the original GT, which can only be a good thing.
We never achieved gold on a lot of thing's, but i will go back to those when i set my wheel up, but we did really well with controller, taking it in turn's, overall the whole package just seems to gel, so for me at least game 9/10, fun, 10/10.

Hello,
gran turismo 7 is an excellent simracing game. the modeling of the cars and their behavior are excellent. we recover a little easily some loss of grip but overall we are largely at the level of an assetto corsa for production cars.
I haven't driven racing cars much yet so I can't really compare the behavior with rfactor or iracing.
it is on the other hand the best game to drive a series car and upgrade it to make it gain in performance!! no game comes close to him on that side.

I really think some EU watchdog should take a look at the (micro) transactions system before kids spend their entire savings on cars to support their discord. Besides that: 4K is still ugly when using old textures.
Anyways: the gameplay setup (cafee) is setup for a huge grind which tests the patients of people only for them to buy cars for 30 euro's....that should be forbidden!

Let's put it this way: for a "simcade" game, GT Sport turned more virtual racers into real race winners than all other established sims combined. That should probably tell any human interested in racing games that emulate reality that either "simcade" is the wrong word to describe it, either Nissan Academy was a congregation of modern day witches.

GT7 brings to the mix even more detailed physics and better force feedback (partnerships with Michelin, Brembo to name a couple), better visual details (with HDR), a great new sound technology, live day/night and weather. How many sims have all this today, I wonder?
