Finally. After 22 events, one cancellation, much action and plenty of controversy, the 2023 Formula One season approaches the winter break as Abu Dhabi is the last GP of the year. Here is what to keep your eye on this weekend.

Yes, you read that right. This Formula One season comes to an end this weekend as the paddock heads to Yas Marina. The Abu Dhabi GP will once again put an end to the year, with driver, team personnel and media surely all looking forward to some down time.

But before that time off, the top 20 drivers in the world have to go through three more Practice sessions, a Qualifying hour and a Grand Prix. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is rarely an exciting event, but the sunset race time and bright lights around the circuit make it a show. With few chances to take in live motorsport after this weekend, make sure to tune in. Here is what you will see if you do.

Championship Standings On The Line

For those living under a pile of rocks, the 2023 F1 season has not been a competitive marvel at the front of the field. The title was wrapped up in Qatar and Perez claimed P2 in the championship last time out.

F1 Championship StandingsPoints
Max Verstappen549
Sergio Perez273
Lewis Hamilton232
Carlos Sainz200
Fernando Alonso200
Lando Norris195
Charles Leclerc188
George Russell160

However, fourth to seventh in the standings are covered by just 12 points with Sainz and Alonso level on points, Norris five behind and Leclerc only just trailing. Whilst there is little prize money on offer, each driver will want to come out on top. This will provide them with confidence and motivation into next year. Expect this fight to be immensely tight all weekend, and a big talking point.

Sandwiching this battle are the two Mercedes drivers. This means that Mercedes and Ferrari are separated by just five points in the Constructors' Standings. According to sources, the difference in cash reward between P2 and P3 in the Manufacturers' Standings is $9 million. Certainly nothing to scoff at, both teams will be pushing to the maximum for the additional funds. Make sure to keep an eye on all four drivers involved. With such a small gap, the slightest position change could be crucial.

Aside from the F1 action, Formula 2 also returns this weekend. With intense action at every opportunity, the racing is sure to be close. But with the championship still not sealed, the Théo Pourchaire and Frederik Vesti fight will be close. There is admittedly a 25-point difference between the two, but with 39 points available across the weekend, keep your eyes on the series.

Fatigue Playing Its Part?

Earlier this year, extreme weather conditions saw the cancellation of the San Marino GP. But despite the schedule missing a race, the 2023 season has been a record-breaking calendar in terms of length. Never in the history of the sport have there been 23 rounds in a season.

With back-to-back events more prominent than ever, teams, drivers and everyone involved are all certainly exhausted. With the promise of some downtime on the horizon, the paddock will be anxious to get the event over with. Potential rushing, or fatigue could well lead to some mistakes.

Be it drivers dropping the car in the later sessions, or mechanics with finger trouble resulting in slow pitstops. Small issues could well turn the race on its head. That being said, these are the best drivers and mechanics in the world. So surely mistake is not a word in their dictionaries.

Abu Dhabi GP in F1 23

As sim racers, we all love the idea of putting ourselves behind the wheel of real world cars. Whilst it is far from the simulation many would hope for, F1 23 is certainly one of the best ways of recreating the 2023 Abu Dhabi GP.

Yesterday, EA Sports unveiled the first of its F1 Scenarios for the weekend. To get yourself into the mood of F1 racing at Yas Marina, try and retain Bottas' chance at a podium. After the weekend, one is sure to discover more Scenarios and F1 Replay modes. Currently, fans can recreate the top moments of last weekend's Las Vegas GP.

Who are you rooting for in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Checo was clumsy when overtaking Lando Norris, and, Lando could have used more road to avoid a collision, doing so might have been a bit easier on his tyres... but I was only watching not driving, and really I felt that the penalty was a bit harsh,
More importantly why was there so many pitlane infringements to be investigated... some it seems, to be investigated after the end of the season. :coffee:

investigated after the end of the season. :coffee:

Yes it was harsh, but to be fair, however much MV is criticized, it was mostly Checo doing wrong moves and not giving back the position this season.

If only Charles would've helped out Checo right after he'd overtaken Russel in stead of the last lap, Ferrari might've been 2nd.

Max is overly criticized because he's doing so well, and, for much the same reason he's overlooked when it comes to DoD, he's doing an incredible job.

I feel that when Checo changed his driving approach... the one that stems all the way back to his days at McLaren when he was told to pull his socks up and put his elbows out, (he put on a Pastor Maldoado hat and went to war at Monaco hitting both his team mate 'JB' and Kimi) he lost the smoothness of style that was known to save his tyres at Sauber, his aggressive side can be entertaining but it's never going to be a championship winner.

If's and maybe's, Charles could have slowed down sooner to help Perez, but then Russel would be on him. To properly defend Perez getting 5 seconds up the road he would have to block Russel which, with the ABU DRS zones, would have made him vulnerable.
To me this DRS nonsense about leading cars slowing down to help others shows the real problem with DRS. Drivers can manipulate both when they cross detection zones (Max & Lewis a few years ago) and when they slow other cars. I keep saying IF some sort of artificial pace enhancement is needed for passing, then Push to Pass is a far better solution. Drivers can choose when to attack, when to defend, and are limited as to how many seconds per race they can deploy P2P.
Finally, I won't mention his name to prevent those who haven't watched the event yet from Spoilers... :) but congratulations to the F1 World Driver Champion!

In the end it ended up just costing CL a place in the drivers WC in stead of gaining in the constructors WC.

Man, I hate that track! I mean, really, really hate that track! Why the season has to end there, I don't know...

Anyway, season's finally over. 22 races is way too much.

I've been saying for a long time now that DRS is garbage and should be ditched in favor of P2P.

It has nothing to do with DRS. Leclerc could have slowed down Russell a lot in the last sector of last lap, but he had also to remain less than 5 secs behind Perez to finish P2. Being less than 5 secs behind Perez while keeping Russell above 5 secs was almost impossible.

redbull has a superior.!.fia needs to change something!!! tires to be durable so that you can drive them 110% until replacement, the tracks should be changed to the old days when there is either grass or sand next to the track and not these incredibly large parking spaces, and take that drs away because every one of us could overtake with direct drs help. f1 is boring as hell but in motogp every driver has almost a chance to win.

i see nothing special max verstappens wins this year or the championship.i just remember how he won his first championship :)
Everyone has their opinion about that..... the Lewis fans will say it is Massi's fault forever. But the Mercedes team could have simply made a pit stop, but they did not do that for fresh tires, because they did not want to take the gamble. And throughout the season it was quite strange circumstances with penalties against Verstappen, which meant that Mercedes (with help) could always come back into the championship, otherwise he (Verstappen) would already be WDC for the infamous race in Abu Dhabi.
Max was so good that season he always had the lead with a lesser car.

of course its masis fault because he didnt do what the rules say.and im not lewis fan or any of the f1 drivers. kr69 is my driver

It's likely because the right amount of folding paperwork was provided.
Indeed, just like the selection of Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 World Cup, which was blatantly rigged by Infantino and Fifa. And some people thought FIFA would clean up its act when Blatter was removed!!!
