After a somewhat surprisingly intense Miami Grand Prix, Formula One returns to Imola for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Lando Norris getting the best of Max Verstappen and Red Bull has been all the buzz since Miami, but can Mclaren's pace seep into Italy at this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix? However, the British team's return to the top step of the podium is just one of many storylines in the lead-up to the race at the famous Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.

Alex Albon Commits To Williams

One of the headline stories coming out of the F1 paddock before this weekend's Grand Prix is that Alex Albon has extended his contract at Williams. The exact number of seasons is currently unknown, however, a 'Multi-year' deal solidifies the Thai driver's presence on the F1 grid for the near future.

With the announcement of his contract extension, Albon has squashed the rumour that he will fill the now-vacant Mercedes seat left by Lewis Hamilton for 2025.

James Vowles, Williams Team Principal said: "We are delighted to secure Alex's long-term future with Williams Racing. He has exceptional talent, technical input and dedication to the cause and this is a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are on."

Mercedes' Upgrade Issues

Just before the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes launched its first step towards boosting their cars up to the front of the grid once again. However, this first step in their two-step process was fairly unsuccessful. Heading into Imola this weekend, the Silver Arrows need to work out what blunted their progress in Miami.

Contrary to the results, Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin further explained that the parts performed as expected in Miami:

"We managed to pull forward about half of our update kit to Miami and then the other half is going to arrive in Imola, and we are working hard on the future races to try and bring developments to them as well."

Can Mclaren Capitalise?

History was made in Miami as Lando Norris took his maiden Grand Prix victory. Nonetheless, Verstappen still has a considerable 33-point lead in the drivers’ championship over his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Pérez, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in third following another podium for the Monégasque in Miami.

Heading to Imola, the papaya squad will be looking to carry their momentum onwards and upwards. Could Norris really challenge Verstappen and Red Bull at the front? Could Piastri be in the picture to stifle the Red Bulls further?

Adrian Newey's Future

Adrian Newey does not rule out joining another F1 team after he leaves Red Bull next year. The 65-year-old engineering staple is set to depart the team at the end of this season. But retirement is not beckoning to him just yet.

Newey admitted he is “seriously considering changing teams, going somewhere else and doing another four or five years.” But what we want to know is who he will go to. Ferrari? Mercedes? Aston Martin? Let us know where you think Newey will end up come 2025.

Interestingly during the break, Alex Albon signed a multi year deal with Williams,
Does that mean perhaps, there was some leverage from a prospect of a certain designer moving back to the team, I can't see any other reason to reject a Mercedes seat to commit for the long term to Williams.

Question is whether he actually turned down the Merc seat or if it was never a thing to begin with. However, I had that exact same thought as well - wouldn't that be a story arc :D After all, Williams' downturn started (albeit slowly) when said certain designer left for McLaren in 1997...

Yeah, but 'Regimental Sargent Major' Head was there before, he had a great brain and a pitlane bark that allegedly would even send other pit crews scampering.
Ahh, it was all different back in my day!

Certainly very different times. It's sad that they are over in a way, but on the other hand, it is extremely interesting that many people who were involved back then speak about what was going on behind the scenes much more freely now.

I love the Bring Back V10s podcast for that very reason. I learn a lot of new things about races and events that I already knew about from watching them as a kid, but you never hear these insider stories as things are actually happening.

Yeah the V10 era was special, but I think I'm right in remembering Brundle saying the resonance/harmonics of those engines used to make the driver feel physically sick, that couldn't have been nice, perhaps it was just his car I don't know, because some of the other drivers still romance about those days.
I still think that a return to exotic NA engines of a larger displacement with a free cylinder count could be the way to go with sustainable fuels, Vettel already proved it's good enough with his own Ex- Mansell red five, it could be exciting and show fun doesn't have to die with oil the fields.

I wouldn't be surprised if the engines did that - some of the recordings on YouTube sound absolutely vicious just from the spectator POV, must've been much worse with the thing basically bolted to your back

Agree on the second part. I've been saying this for a while, the road relevant stuff may be nice and all, but I think racing series would profit from a wow factor in the form of noise. Fully lean into the "you won't find this kind of spectacle anywhere but here". That's what was the exciting thing about racing throughout most of its existence.

Well thankfully and hopefully the return to those engines is, apparently, possible (a few years to wait anyway), and it would be awesome.
Nice first practice session, ferrari and mercedes on the right path apparently, and a few mistakes by max, that's rare to see xD

Had to fight for that one, and Nico Hulkenberg's P10 on his first visit to the track, not bad ol' mate, I wonder though what position he'd have had on new tyres in the Q3, I also wonder if he's gonna start the race on New tyres in the hope of gaining that few yards at the start, or if he just used old tyres in Q3 because he had no new ones left.
As for Max, nice to see him upset the haters once again, he was complaining all day yesterday and this morning then... Bang! at the right time

It turns out Nico and Max are 'tow' buddies, and shame for Oscar grid penalty.

Oh what a great qualifying session, hope to see a good race tomorrow. This is a 100% max pole, checo was 11th my goodness :S.. nice to see the mclarens competitive, while i expected much more from ferrari :S

I think from various F1 journalists reports the Merc deal was only going to be a stop gap job, until Kimi Antonelli arrived for good at Merc. Apparently that was not what Alex was after - however, going back and listening to a Beyond The Grid podcast with Adrian is it quite interesting to hear about his close deals over the years with Ferrari, and him going out of his way to state what a shame it is timing wise that he's never had the chance to work alongside Lewis. Everything might be falling into place to make that finally happen.

I'm amazed how the team that is in charge of the live camera feed always seems to be able to out do their previous terrible job of covering a race. Who decides that on the last (or may have been second to last lap), that we're going to switch away from two cars battling for the lead to go to a live feed of Zak Brown staring at a monitor for 10 seconds?

I know what a man staring at a monitor looks like, how about we cover the actual race?

I got the feeling that Max could have won this race in any of the cars that finished today in the podium, and from the other 2 drivers I felt that none of those drivers would won on the RB today.
